Diversity

Diversity is such an important part of our everyday life. Everything around us is different, and these differences should be celebrated and not discriminated against. I will look at different art pieces that depict diversity in modern art, from 1980 to the present date. I will focus a lot on racial prejudice and diversity in people, because of how, excuse my language, fucked up our world because of the racism and prejudice that exists. I especially want to focus on non-popular art. Like random websites and such. By doing this, I am adding to the theme of diveristy in my own blog itself.

Full Spectrum
Susanne Slavick
2020

I really like this peice because of the contrast in the color. It really brings the group of people together to focus on the center of the image. It includes people of all races in the drawing, and then adds the color spectrum. This is meant to be an inclusive peice to really dive into the racial prejudice that existes in this henious world we live in. I really like how immediately obvious the theme of diversity is in this peice, and the viewer can immediately see the inclusivity of all races and colors in it.

Celebrating Oneness Through Art
Nathan Miller
2016

Similar to the art I showed bove, this theme of diversity is very prevalent immediately in this peice. What I especially like is how the artist portrayed the similarity of children, and also their differences. I think the artist used children becuse of how open minded they are. They have not yet been scarred by the world and often times do not even recognize diversity, but in positive way. The contrast between scenes is quite stark, but that adds to the theme of diversity. I also really like how each child has a mountain behind them, and the three almost blend together into one mountain range.

This art peice is in a school, and done by many different children. I happened to stumble across it while researching diversity art. I really like this wall because, like mentioned above, children have a very open minded view of the world. With each child designing a fish, and bringing them together, it gives the children a very inclusive look on the world. The quote across the top perfectly summarizes the theme of this peice, and I love the pun to really help the children understand. While this art wall is not majestic or stunning, it is the theme that is the beautiful part. It really encaptures the theme of diversity and conclusivity, and makes me wish that everyone had the simple and happy worldview that so many children have.

This is a random art peice from a diversity art contest from a school in Florida. Smiling is one of my favorite things to every exist. A simple smile goes a long way, for anyone and everyone. This peice captures the essence of a loving smile so perfectly and the text sums up such a perfect message. The truth is there are so many barriers between people that a smile is really universal. In fact, it is one of the only things that, as humans, we all can come together on. Similar to many of the other peices I chose, the focus is on the theme, not the art. The meaning is the true beauty in the art. The curves of this drawing are off, the colors are abrupt, and the strokes are obvious, but the love and the meaning is there, which is what counts when speaking on the theme of diversity.

Mixed
Arree Chung
2018

While a book is usually not considered art, I am talking about diversity, and art is very diverse. This childrens book is about primary colors, and how they mix to create the entire spectrum of colors we know and see. It focuses on inclusivity, and how we may not want to come together at first, when we do, we can create something beautiful. I liked this because of how simple it is, and the use of colors is an ingenious idea.

One Heart Puzzle

I chose this peice as my last because of how simple and loving it is. The theme of inclusion is immediate and you cannot help but smile as you look at it. The drawings look like a childs and the images are nowhere near perfect, but most the other peices, the theme is what counts. The theme of love is the most important of all and that is what we must remember.

  1. Hey Ian, I like school fish mural. The mural posses a rhythm, because of how all of the fish are swimming in the same direction. In One heart puzzle, I like the radially outward symmetry around the heart. I think society focuses too much on what makes us different, instead of trying to find what makes us similar. Your post certainly reflects on what makes us similar. Thank you for your post.
